History
Sikh Sangat Charitable Association Newcastle Incorporated was officially established in 2020 to support and serve the growing Sikh community in Newcastle, NSW. In its early years, members of the sangat gathered in their homes to hold weekly Diwans, strengthening faith, unity, and connection within the community.
As the sangat expanded, the need for a permanent Sikh temple in Newcastle became clear. In 2023, weekly Diwans were relocated to Woodberry, allowing for greater accessibility and participation while plans progressed for a dedicated Gurdwara.
Today, we are proud that all religious services and community programs are held at our permanent home, Gurdwara Guru Maneyo Granth Sahib Rutherford. This Gurdwara in Rutherford NSW serves the wider Newcastle and Maitland regions, providing a welcoming place for kirtan, paath, Diwans, and Sikh religious ceremonies. The establishment of this Sikh temple in Rutherford marks a significant milestone for the Sikh community in Newcastle, creating a lasting spiritual home for future generations.
In addition to religious services, the Sikh Sangat Charitable Association remains deeply committed to the Sikh principle of selfless service (sewa). Since 2023, we have been operating a weekly langar sewa program in Woodberry. Every Tuesday, a free food stall is set up in Woodberry to provide nutritious vegetarian meals to anyone in need. This initiative reflects the Sikh values of equality, compassion, and inclusivity, welcoming people of all backgrounds.
Through spiritual enrichment at Gurdwara Guru Maneyo Granth Sahib Rutherford and ongoing community outreach in Woodberry and across Newcastle, the Sikh Sangat Charitable Association Newcastle Incorporated continues to strengthen and serve the wider community.
